FAO To Support Tanzania's Inteventions Againsts Wildlife-Human Conflicts

THE Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism has entered into a special agreement with The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to run a robust program to educate the public on proper ways to protect themselves from the damages of wildlife.


Being part of the program's curtain raiser activities,  the two sides convened in Morogoro region to develop professional publications that will be used to roll out the said education throughout the vital program.

In his remarks when opening the session for the development of the publications, the Director of Training and Statistics at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism,  Dr. Edward Kohi, said implementation of the program was aiming to lessen a spate of wildlife-human conflicts,  among others.

"The core vision is to ensure wildlife are being protected and preserved professionally whereby the communities alongside the wildlife corridors remain safely and more friendly to the wild animals, " he informed. 

And he added, to have the vision materializing, we have realized over the need to launch a special program for creating awareness towards the communities dwelling adjacent to the wildlife corridors on how the can protect themselves and their properties against the wild animals. 



"Wildlife have great potential for our country's economic gains but there's need to ensure they're not turning into a bad ghost that killing the citizens, as well as destroying properties, " he insisted. 

For instance,  he said it was disconcerting to see the way elephants are killing the people, while on the other hand they (Jumbos) are very meaningful when it comes to tourism attractions. 

"The ministry is currently working to  promote the tourism sector through using all kinds of methods and resources that the country has been endowed with, including the wildlife," he added.

On other hand, the National Advisor to support the management of conflicts between wildlife and humans from the World Food Organization (FAO), Beatha Fabian expressed that implementation of the timely program would play key role to support the government's efforts in dealing with the challenges of the wildlife in the country. 

"Tanzania has been blessed to be the home of a umber of national parks and other game reserves that harboring potential and rarely found animals, thus this program will compliment a ray of efforts so far initiated by the government to assure the sector is being handled more professionally, " she added.


Others stakeholders who participated in the meeting to share their inputs for the development of the said publications include Tanzania Wildlife Authority (TAWA), Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI), and Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA)  to mention but a few.
