Mipango Institute Plants Over 1,000 Trees To Celebrate World Environment Day

THE Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP) has planted over 1,000 trees at its Miyuji North Campus, 'The Forty Hectare' as part to celebrate this year’s World Environment Day (WBD). 

Speaking during the tailor-made event for the planting of the tree varieties, the varsity's Rector, Professor Hozen Mayaya said the state-owned educational facility was rolling out its daily services inline with President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan vision on environmental conservation.


"It was for this reason", he communicated that "We had decided to initiate Mipango Environmental Club (MEC) to ensure effective and professional handling and improvement of the environment, surrounding all campuses, as well as the entire region as a whole;"

Apart from the fact that the varsity is offering diverse environmental -related courses, from Basic Certificate to Master's Degree, he said IRDP have also developed a useful strategy to raise awareness towards the public pertaining to environmental conservation.


He disclosed the courses as Bachelor Degree in Environmental Planning and Management, Bachelor Degree in Urban Development and Environmental Management, Master's Degree in Environmental Planning and Management as well as Master's Degree in Environmental Health and Sanitation.

"We have been organising a series of regular exercises through which we are collaborating with the local government officials to engage the communities to participate in environmental sanitation activities, " the Rector infomed.

He observed, IRDP is making brave use of the activities to educate the involved residents over the importance of conserving the environment, including planting enough trees.


Giving further details, Prof Mayaya said working in sync with different development partners, the varsity has so far implemented numerous projects for the improvement of the environment in different areas.

For instance, he briefed, through funds from the European Union (EU) the varsity implemented a special project to set up an eco-village that  tested and evaluated over 20 climate change adaptation technologies in the semi-arid Dodoma Region.


"The project was executed at Chololo Village under the partnership of six local agencies led by the Dodoma-based Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP)," he stated.

He assured that the Dodoma-based Institute will continue standing at the frontline to implement environmental conservation initiatives, including mulling over the possibilities to source more funds for the implementation of environmental- friendly projects and other community -based activities.
